SA real bond returns have mostly been lower than SA equity returns measured over 10-year rolling periods. The period 1995-2005 was an exception, with real bond returns outperforming equity returns by a wide margin. Over the five-year period that ended September 2016, South African equities outperformed bonds by 7.3 percentage points.
