South Africa Foreign Exchange Market (Monthly Report) - January 2019

The rand weakened against most major developed and emerging market currencies in December 2018 compared with the previous month. The unweighted average change in the value of the rand amounted to -0.9%. Month-on-month, the rand appreciated most against the Canadian dollar (9.1%), Japanese yen (8.5%), Australian dollar (8.2%) and NZ dollar (8%). The rand slipped most against the Chinese yuan (-14.4%), and was also weaker against the euro (-5.8%), US dollar (-5.4%), Swiss franc (-5.2%) and British pound (-4.7%).
