The rand strengthened against most major developed and emerging market currencies in January 2019 compared with the previous month. The unweighted average change in the value of the rand amounted to 2.4%. Month-on-month, the rand appreciated most against the Chinese yuan (15.1%), Indian rupee (9.3%), US dollar (8.1%), and euro (7.7%). The rand also gained against the Swiss franc (6.1%) and British pound (4.6%), but weakened against the Japanese yen (-9.3%), Australian dollar (-4.5%), NZ dollar (-5.6%) and Canadian dollar (-7%).
