South Africa Foreign Exchange Market — January 2022 Report

Compared with the previous month, the rand generally weakened in December 2021 against most major developed market and developing market currencies. The unweighted average change in the value of the rand amounted to -1.2%. Month-on-month, the rand depreciated most against the Japanese yen (-2.8%), Chinese yuan (-2.8%), US dollar (-2.4%) and Swiss franc (-2.4%). The rand lost 1.1% against the British pound, 1.4% against the euro. The rand strengthened marginally (0.1%) against the Australian dollar and by 1.1% against the New Zealand dollar.
