Compared with the previous month, the rand generally strengthened in January 2022 against most major developed market and developing market currencies. The unweighted average change in the value of the rand amounted to 2%. Month-on-month, the rand appreciated most against the Russian rouble (5.7%), Japanese yen (3.3%), New Zealand dollar (2.7%) and Swiss franc (2.5%). The rand also gained against the Chinese yuan (2%), US dollar (2.3%) and euro (2%). The rand gained marginally against the UK pound (0.2%).
