South Africa Economic Indicators — April 2022 Report

April 11, 2022

According to Stats SA’s Formal Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES), non-agricultural employment in large businesses and government increased in the final quarter of 2021, by 0.6% q/q (62,000). The year-on-year (y/y) increase was 1.6% (154,000). While any improvement is obviously encouraging, it should be noted that this was entirely owing to more part-time jobs. Full-time jobs declined on both a quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year basis. Of the 62,000 jobs created, 51,500 were in national, provincial and municipal governments.
